Yatton II 23-19 Oldfield Old Boys II
By Billy Mackay
Defence holds firm to win 5th game of the season
Yatton turned up to the reverse fixture with 14 players and lost 59-0 so some wrote the home side off even before the Kick-Off. Yatton with a couple of new faces kicked the game off & were immediately subject to Oldfields powerful pack. It looked like it could be a long afternoon when Oldfield scored in the 2nd minute & then again in the 10th. (Yat 0 - 12 Odf)
After a long break due to a serious injury, Yatton woke up and the elusive Tom Armistead stepped inside to cross the whitewash for a try which he also converted. (Yat 7-12 Odf) Oldfield responded with a converted try on 20mins but that was to be their last points of the game. From then on Yatton's pacey back line and direct running took control. A few phases after Morgan Price's break, some slick hands saw center Sam Jarvis score on his first game of 2019. (Yat 12-19 Odf)
Yatton were to score once more before halftime when a big hit from Steve Hazell saw Billy Mackay get a turn-over to let Finbar Lawrence and Si Wright storm up the pitch before eventually seeing Cam Pollederi cross the line for 2nd try of the season and that was halftime. (Yat 17-19 Odf)
Yatton thought they were going to start the 2nd half the way they ended the first when Paul Catchlove caught the kickoff, darted down the short side and was just inches away from regathering his own Chip & Chase. Yatton did get a pentaly from the attack which Tom Armistead converted to give the Home side the slenderest of leads (Yat 20-19 Odf) The Vistors never gave up and fought hard but every time Yattons defence stood firm. Man-of-the-Match Morgan Price was immense in ensuring that Oldfield didn't score in the second half often putting his head in places people don't want to put their feet.
With 2 minutes left on the clock Tom Armistead took his game tally to 13 by kicking his second penalty of the day. From the restart Oldfield regathered the ball for one final attempt and getting the W but John Mackay stopped the full back in his tracks before the pressure told & Oldfield dropped the ball. Giving Yatton their 5th league win of the season. A outstanding effort for all the players and supporters that were watching. Another tough fixture next week away to Old Reds but the reverse fixture could have gone either way so anything can happen.
