Yatton 2nds (7) vs Walcot 2nds (86) - Match report 9/2/19
Having had a narrow defeat to Walcot 2nds earlier in the season there was some confidence in the Yatton team that things could be different this time and a win could be on the cards but disruption in the team during the week lead to a set of forwards which tipped the scales at 950kg! Rivalling the weight of the French Pack from the week before. No problems in fielding experienced front row players (for a change) but they were always going to be challenged for pace and mobility around the pitch.
Playing the first senior game on the "new pitch" by the Bridge Inn, the visitors playing against a strong wind were quick to exploit a very "narrow" Yatton defence and ran in some quick tries in the wider channels in the opening exchanges. Yatton never gave up and offered some resistance with the forwards but were not able to retain their shape through enough phases to work themselves over the try line. Scrum half, Finbar Lawrence often looking around to find his first receiver but lacking runners offering themselves.
Turning round at half time 6 tries down, the Yatton team with numerous changes, dug deep and found some gaps in the Walcot defence - often pushing them back into their half against the wind but often to be met with a break away with Yatton's heavier pack left unable to provide support. A moment of relief came after some good work by the Yatton team driving towards the line on the right hand side lead to a penalty try in the corner but that was to be the end of the points for Yatton. Walcot finished off with a couple of final tries and ran out winners by 7-86.
Next week Hornets 3rds away - with more team availability, Yatton will be looking to repeat the previous good performance against Hornets 3rds before Christmas.
