Yatton II 24-29 Gordano II
By Billy Mackay
2XV kick last play penalty to get a point.
Yatton host 4th places Gordano in what on paper should have been an easy win for the visitors but Yattons determination saw them pick up a point.
Yatton scored with just 6 minutes on the clock when a dummy kick on their own try line saw Joe Bell set up Morgan Price down the short side for his second 100m try in 2 weeks. Fly half Joe Bell with the conversion. 7-0
Gordano responded with 2 tries of their own with some slick offloads. But we’re reduced to 13 men when a high tackle saw the Gordano 12 put in the bin. Minutes later a second player followed when the Gordano forward didn’t go back 10 at a tap penalty. With the 2 man advantage Yattons pack turned the screw push Gordano off their own ball at 5 consecutive scrums. Yatton eventually scored their second through fly half Joe Bell (Converted by Will Pearce) but couldn’t take the lead as Si Wright & Luke Roberson we’re both held up just before half time.
Halftime - Yatton 14-14 Gordano
Gordano, now restored to 15, struck back at the start of the 2nd half scoring 2 quick fire tries (of which 1 was converted) & then a penalty to see them take a 29-14 lead with 30 minutes to play.
Yatton regrouped and to score a try through Billy Mackay. Conversation again by Will Pearce (Yatton 21-29 Gordano) They looked like they’d scored a second to be back in the game from a driving maul thought no8 Luke Robertson but it was judged a knock on. Yatton won a Penalty with 5 minutes to go but the kick hit the post. Tom Clark couldn’t quite hold on the rebound. From the resulting scrum Yatton won a penalty and standout centre Will Pearce kicked it with the last play of the game to see Yatton take a losing Bonus point from match.
Man of the Match could have gone to any of the pack but Stuart Hill was standout at the set piece both at hooker and Prop lead the back forward all day long. Next week Yatton travel to Midsomer Norton who are top of Somerset 2 North.
