Yatton 43-34 St Bernadettes OB

Match report from Ian Moore

Yatton 43, St Bernadettes OBs 34 (Ian Moore is your match-day analyst)

Yatton stretched their unbeaten run to five games since the turn of the year with a far from convincing win over a fiesty St Bernadettes, who refused to lie down, and came away with a bonus point to show for their efforts.

28-0 in as many minutes, looking in total control, scoring tries through James Grimes, Pete Quinn, Ollie Hardwidge and Mitch Want all converted by Mike Gane, it appeared Yatton were to run up a cricket score. But a combination of a yellow card to the fit again Ben Bushell, wrong options, sloppy finishing, and an opposition who started to string some phases together, began to eat into the home sides lead. 28-0 became 28-10 by half- time.

Into the Second half and St B's playing with the breeze and slope sensed a game was there to be won, and soon added two more tries to take the score to 28-22. Whatever was said under the posts worked, as the home side settled down and started to play some rugby. Led by the mesmerising Want and the tenacious Charlie Wemyss, the lead increased through the boot of Jack Edwards, who nailed a Penalty 22 yards out to make the score 31-22. It soon became 38-22 after putting two passes together they set right wing Quinn away, who with footwork and strength was to give supporting full back Liam Chalmers an inside pass, who beat the covering defence and sprint over. Edwards added the extras.

St Bs quickly responded with a fine individual try from their pacey centre. 38-29. But Yatton again worked Quinn away who after swapping passes put Ben Bowyer in. There was still just enough time for the away side to exert more pressure on the home defence and score their final try with the last play. The final score being 43-34.

The top of the league looks very tight and Yatton with this run have given themselves an opportunity to challenge for a play- off place. With teams to play around and above them, defensively they will need to tighten up.

Wednesday February 20th, Yatton travel to Bridgwater to play Yeovil in the Somerset Vase. 7.30 ko. All support welcome.
