1XV have a bad day at the races...

Match report from Clive "Paps" Hall

Having played some excellent attractive rugby over the past few weeks, Yatton's shortcomings were fully exposed in this feisty encounter with Cheltenham, who were seeking to do the double having beaten Yatton at the Park with a narrow win in October.

With many players not available or injured, this was always going to be a tough away game for Yatton and the tale of woe was compounded further when Yatton lost three more players through injury during the game. On a level but heavy pitch, it was self-evident from the whistle that Cheltenham's physicality would dominate the game, and their superiority in the scrum and line out soon came to the fore. The breakdowns were more evenly contested, but they were soon rewarded in the opening minutes, with a converted try in the corner. Cheltenham scored two more unconverted tries in quick succession and Yatton were truly under the cosh when they lost debunte hooker, Glen Phillips through injury.

It was the skills of Tom Moore that took the game to Cheltenham and give Yatton a glimmer of hope for he was to score the try of the afternoon. From the half way, Tom set off on a powerful, illusive run, shredding the Cheltenham defence in the process, to go under the posts; Jack Edwards making no mistake with the extras. Spurred on by the try, Yatton tried to improve their game, but Cheltenham put them under the sternest pressure as basic handling errors came to the fore. Disappointedly, they were unable to penetrate the Cheltenham line with a meaningful attack, and Cheltenham scored another unconverted try on the stroke of half time making it 22- 7.

In the second half, Yatton were unable to add to their score as more injuries fully utilised the bench, while Cheltenham were to score two more unconverted tries, making the final score, 32- 7.

A disappointing result for Yatton, yet no one could fault the commitment of the Yatton squad. On the day, Cheltenham deserved their win, as they were the stronger team.

There is no game next week, so there will be some extra time to regroup before playing Old Bristolians at the Park on the 17th.
