Chairman's Notes: 1XV v Midsomer Norton

By Simon Foley

Notes from YRFC Chairman Howard Davies in advance of the 1st XVs final league game of the season.

Well here we are at the end of what is really a disappointing season, having to face the fact that next season we will be playing in the Somerset Premier League.

Relegation is always a disappointment and this one particularly so as this is our 50th anniversary season. Our position in the league has come about due to a mix of administrative errors off the field and some unfortunate results on the field. It has also been a season where we have seen the problems that can be caused by a high level of injuries to members of the first team squad as well as the difficulties caused when players are, for various reasons, unavailable for selection. Despite all the problems though it has been great to see the team refusing to compromise on their determination to continue to play the fast, positive, attacking rugby that has given us all so much pleasure over the last few seasons and which I fervently hope will continue to do so for may seasons to come.

On another positive note we have seen recently a number of this year’s Colts team making their debut at senior level and I’m sure that next season they will add considerably to the club’s playing strength.

Our visitors today are Midsomer Norton who were themselves relegated last season, and as always we welcome them – players, officials and supporters – to The Park and hope that they have a great day.

As most of you will know our final 1st team game each season is traditionally “President’s Day” so a big thank you to John Crew for today’s lunch. A very special thank you though is due to Pat Crew who, together with her team of ladies, will once again be ensuring that we really enjoy lunching on the famous “Pat’s Pies.” Long may the tradition continue.

This will be my last VP lunch as Chairman of our great club as I am standing down at the end of the season and at this point I would like to say a really big thank you to everyone who has given me so much support and encouragement over the last two years and, also, to thank all our supporters who have given so much encouragement to the teams - week after week, home and away. So today lets be at our best, making lots of noise to encourage our team, recognising the good play of the opposition and remembering that whatever we may think of the referee’s decision, he’s trying to do his best and without him there is no game at all.

So (for the last time this season) ENJOY the day – ENJOY your rugby.

Howard Davies - Chairman
